BASALT STONE AND USES IN CONSTRUCTION
Basalt is the most common volcanic rock: It is formed as the volcanic magma erupts onto the surface or even in the water and undergoes a rapid cooling process. It has varying shades of grey to black. The fast cooling process makes the creation of the minerals almost invisible, making it a fine-grained substance. Basalt is the rock that is the most plentiful in the crust of the Earth. It is an intergalactic rock that can also be found in the Moon, Venus, Mars and several asteroids. The ocean floor is generally made up of basalt rock. Basalt has no harmful properties, any form of it. It is non-explosive and noncombustible.
1. Ancient Uses:
During times of ancient Rome, basalts were used for a lot of purposes, like street pavers. They were also used extensively for a lot of construction purposes, like stadium seating. The examples that were left witnesses from this era are the dark-coloured stones that are found in the historic ruins of this era.
- Railroad: Basalt is used for the railroad ballast. These stones are used for support and can provide drainage. They are placed as bedrocks for the racks of railroad.
- Gardening: Gardeners are using basalt to prevent the spread of weeds in plants and flower beds.
2. Modern Use:
Today, basalt is used to a lot of things. Most common use is as aggregates. Basalts that are crushed are used for construction purposes, like asphalt paving, concrete aggregate and rock filtering agents. Basalts are added as aggregates to increase strength to concrete. Basalt slabs can also be cut into dimensions to be used as flooring coverings and veneers. They can also be used by sculptors for monuments and other things.
- Indoor uses: They can also be used as worktops, wall panels, fireplaces and countertops among others. They are also excellent as decorative stone and interior decoration.
- Sculptures and Artifacts. With its properties, like fine grained hardness and homogenous grey colour, basalt has become popular among sculptors. Most of the Moai icons found on Easter Island are made up of basalt. The Rosetta Stone that is used to interpret the hieroglyphics in Egypt is also made up of Basalt. During the German and the Roman empires, basalt was widely used, from vases and jewelry to the beautiful columns.
